Ladies Intermediate Champions

Congratulations to our senior ladies team who were crowned intermediate county champions after a fantastic victory over a strong Eastern Harps side on Sunday. Our young side showed amazing determination and team spirit to come from a point down at half time to win by 1-14 to 1-8. Ruth Monaghan was the scoring star and crowned player of the match after notching 1-3 on the day. There were impressive performances all over the pitch with Aoife Connolly and captain Aoife Gilroy marshalling the defence superbly, Tara Breheny operating excellently at midfield alongside Emma Corcoran, and Karen Maloney leading the attack.

Uniquely, the ladies also play in the senior championship which gets underway next Sunday morning at home to Tourlestrane. Well done to all involved in the team and management who have put in huge work all year.

Senior men

Our senior mens team got their championship campaign off to a winning start with a hard-fought 2-13 to 1-11 victory over Tubbercurry. Tubbercurry got the better of the early exchanges with long ball to their dangerous full forward line proving effective. Dermot Walsh, Luke Gilmartin and Josh Flynn all got on the scoresheet early on and left their side 0-7 to 0-1 up at the water break. St. Mary’s responded well, however, scoring six points in the second quarter to go in 0-9 to 0-7 behind at the interval. Nathan Rooney led the charge with Kyle Cawley, Emlyn Mulligan and Michael Munnelly also chipping in. It was St. Mary’s turn to start fast after half time – Emlyn Mulligan controlled our attack and after we levelled the game in the 32nd minute, Stephen Coen kicked 1-1 to put us ahead 1-10 to 0-9. Tubbercurry got a goal back through a penalty to leave just a point between the sides with 15 minutes remaining. The south Sligo side then equalised as the game neared the full-time whistle, but we showed exceptional character to get the last 1-2, another Stephen Coen goal, to seal the victory. Next we face Shamrock Gaels in round 2 at 7pm on Saturday in Markievicz park again.

John Mc Namara RIP
It is with regret and great sadness that the members of St Marys GAA Club learned of the death of club legend John Mc Namara. He is the second member of our hugely successful senior teams in the 70s and 80s to pass away in the last 2 weeks following on the untimely death of fellow defender John Mc Gowan.
John Mc Namara came from Cavan Gaels GAA and made Sligo and the newly formed St Marys GAA club his home. John affectionately known as John Mac was a member of our senior teams from the club formation in 1976 and continued playing until 1985. He was a member of the clubs first Sligo senior championship and first Connacht club championship winning team in 1977. During his years playing with St Marys he was involved in and backboned the clubs most successful era winning 7 Sligo Senior Championships, 3 Connacht Club Championships and numerous other tournaments inside and outside the county. He also lined out with the Sligo County Senior team over a number of years. He was a majestic fielder nearly always lining out in the full back line. He had many other talents and helped to manage a number of club teams and performed regular singing duets with his wife Noreen in the clubhouse and in Scor. He loved his golf and was a regular sponsor of club fundraisers. He operated the successful John McNamara Hardware business on High St. Sligo for many years and also brought his personal and knowledgeable selling skills to the customers of Woods, Michael Flannery Car Sales and Buckleys in Sligo.
We offer our sincere condolences to his wife Noreen and family Sinead, Colin, Ronan, Kieran and wider McNamara family. Solas Dé ar a anam uasal.
