Club Notes: 22nd August 2022

22.8.22

It was an historic weekend for the club as we fielded five adult teams in the championship for the first time ever. It is a testament to all the hard work by players and coaches that we were able to field senior ladies, senior men, junior ladies, and junior ‘A’ and ‘B’ mens teams from Friday to Sunday. Thanks to all who are giving up their time to make it possible! A big shout out to Marc O’Hehir who togged out for all three mens teams!

Senior men

The senior mens team got their second win in a row in the championship as they got the better of Shamrock Gaels in round 2 on Saturday evening. The game got off to a flying start with both teams scoring early goals before a point had been kicked – Paul Kilcoyne hitting the net for our side. At half-time we were edging the battle 1-7 to 1-6 with Kyle Cawley kicking 2 good points from play, and other scores coming from Nathan Rooney, Emlyn Mulligan and Cian Breheny. We fell behind in the third quarter as Shamrock Gaels upped their intensity, but we responded well to finish stronger. Two points from Can Breheny got us back on track before Patrick Maher and Jay Cox added outstanding scores to swing the momentum our way. We finished 1-14 to 1-12 winners to leave us top of the group ahead of round 3 vs. Carry/St. Joseph’s on September 10th/11th.

Senior ladies

Our senior ladies team were beaten in round 1 of the senior championship by Tourlestrane on Sunday morning. The game was neck and neck in the first quarter as we trailed by a point, 1-3 to 0-7. Emma Corcoran and Tara Breheny impressing in the middle and Karen Maloney dangerous up front. A strong finish to the first half for Tourlestrane which included 5 goals left us with a mountain to climb in the second half and although the ladies battled to the end and put in a strong second half performance we were defeated b 9-19 to 4-10. Next up we face St. Nathy’s away this coming Sunday 28th at 10.30am.

Junior ladies

On Saturday night the junior ladies had their first championship outing in Kent park against strong championship favourites St Patrick’s. Our young team performed heroically to hold the opposition to 0-3 to 2-2  in the first half. St. Patrick’s pulled away midway through the 2nd half and after a yellow card for the home team finished with a converted penalty and a further goal in the last couple of minutes to win 0-4 to 6-5. Next up is Drumcliffe/Rosses-Point away next Saturday night.

Junior men

On Sunday afternoon our mens junior ‘A’ team scraped by Curry in round 1 of the championship. A young side played some exciting football in the first half to lead by 3 points at half time, but it took the introduction of the experienced Johnny Lynch to kick a last minute winner and seal the points. Stephen Henry and Conor White also chipped in with important scores in the second half as Curry mounted the pressure, while Fiachra Darcy and Zack Mahon were excellent in the full back line. In round 2 the meet Shamrock Gaels on Sunday 4th of September.

On Friday night, our junior ‘B’ men were also victorious in Enniscrone. They were 7 point winners against Enniscrone/Kilglass by 2-10 to 2-3 and face Eastern Harps next on Friday 2nd September in Kent Park.

Minor girls

The minor girls played their last championship group game on Thursday night in Kent park against St Molaise Gaels. The home team dominated from early on and ran out winners 4-18 to 2-7. They are now straight through to the final which is  scheduled for 14th September, where they will play the winners of St Nathy’s and St Molaise Gaels. Well done all on a great win and progression to the final!

St. Mary’s All Stars

The St. Mary’s All Stars is a new initiative for kids with additional needs who wish to play football. Every Saturday morning for the month of September we will run games and coaching for kids aged between 5-12. Parents are requested to stay and play with the kids, and you can book in advance through Maggie Heylin on 0861228104 or hmaggie637@gmail.com.

On Monday 22nd August the All Stars visited Croke Park – 12 kids from St Mary’s All Stars enjoying themselves playing drills, games and even a match in our national stadium. A total of 26 clubs were in attendance. We had the pleasure of playing a match on the pitch against St Mary’s Carrick on Shannon. The kids were delighted and played their hearts out. Massive thanks to everyone for helping us out – Conor Conway for organising the bus. Sligo GAA for making a contribution towards the bus. Our wonderful coaches Breda, Marcella, Jack and Brendan as it would not be possible without them.
