John McGowan RIP

It was with great sadness that the members of St Marys GAA Club learned of the sudden death of loyal club stalwart John Mc Gowan. John was a member of our senior teams from the club formation in 1976 and continued playing until 1985. During that time he was involved in winning teams amassing 6 Sligo Senior Championships, 2 Connacht Club Championships, an All Ireland 7s winner in Kilmacud Crokes and numerous other tournaments with St Marys. He was the originator of the now fashionable smother tackle and he managed this on his own. Quietly spoken he always played with a smile but was fiercely competitive. He managed to balance his St Marys Gaelic football and Sligo All Star basketball commitments. In more recent times he would be seen regularly on the sidelines supporting our adult teams as well as enjoying watching his grandchildren participate in Gaelic games. When John was born the mould was cast away. We offer our sincere condolences to the wider McGowan family.

Senior men

Our senior men were defeated by Coolaney/Mullinabreena in their last league game of the season. The game finished 1-12 to 0-14 points and sees us finish 4th in the table. Attention now moves to the championship with our first two games now fixed for Saturday 13th against Tubbercurry and Saturday 20th against Shamrock Gaels – both at 7pm in Markievicz Park.

Ladies

Our adult ladies teams are also preparing for championship football. The senior ladies are in action on Sunday 7th, hosting Eoghan Rua at 10.30am. The junior ladies begin their championship campaign in Kent Park on Saturday 20th, hosting St. Patrick’s at 7pm.

U16 ladies

Hard luck to our Sligo Park Hotel sponsored U16 girls team who had a tough outing last night experiencing our first defeat of the year to the current A Championship holders Eoghan Rua.  The girls battled right to the end despite relentless pressure and should be proud of their effort as they stepped up to the top division.

Next match is home vs. Curry on 11th August at 7pm.

Minor boys

Congratulations to our Cosgroves Centra sponsored U17 boys who started their ‘A’ championship campaign last night with a big win away vs Easkey/St Farnans 0-9 to 4-25. This fantastic performance followed up the recent league success.

U15 boys

Both of our U15 boys teams were victorious in their latest league games. On Friday in the ‘C’ championship we travelled to St. Patrick’s with our younger squad and won a six-goal thriller by 3-12 to 3-5. In the Sunday evening sun, our older team got the better of Calry/St. Joseph’s by 2-9 to 2-5 in a well-contested battle.

Club grounds closure

Our new pitch fence is being installed over the next two weeks. As a result Kent Park is closed save for organised club training sessions and matches.

We would ask that Club Members refrain from entering the club grounds during these ongoing groundworks outside of these times. Can all underage managers please communicate with your respective panels to ensure all parents and players get the message that both Kent Park and the training pitches are closed while construction is ongoing. Please be extra vigilant on health and safety over the next few weeks.
